CopyMinder is third-party software owned by Microcosm Ltd (see their homepage here Microcosm). They are business leaders in software protection.
We use CopyMinder to help PSMotion protect MechDesigner from misuse. CopyMinder is an intelligent system that let's us work together so that PSMotion can make sure that you, as the customer, can keep working.
With good reason, computer users are careful of the information that is passed over the internet from their PCs. There are always people who try to make a quick dollar by exploiting users. The internet simply opened up more doors for those people.
As a software vendor, PSMotion also come under attack from software crackers trying to break our software so that they can distribute it illegally. To try to combat this, PSMotion employ the latest technology to makes sure your copy of our software is genuine.
PSMotion are open about how this system works.
How does it work?
When you open MechDesigner, it connects to a website to see if your license is a legal copy. If it is a legal copy, then you can use the software. If it is not, then MechDesigner simply does not run.
The only information that is sent is information directly related to your use of MechDesigner. There is no information about your work. Period.
You can read a full explanation of how this software protection system works and what information is sent at:
www.copyminder.com/privacy.php.
If, when you run MechDesigner the first time, it cannot connect to the internet, then the protection defaults to the Manual Installation method after approximately 20 seconds.
The Manual Installation method is not our preferred way as it makes protection more tedious for you and for PSMotion. But it is an option for those corporations that cannot use software that can connect to the internet.
Note: If you want the protection to be automatic and over the Internet, do not do a Manual Installation. Instead, find out why MechDesigner cannot connect to the internet.
